References to SANS SEC577 in Networking+

Those readers with access to the January edition of Networking+ will see the comments and advise from Steve Armstrong (Logically Secure's Certified SANS Instructor). In the Training article entitled "Skills: back to the drawing board?" which looks at the skills necessary to understand and support cloud and virtualization implementations, he comments on the recent debut of the SANS SEC577 Virtualization Security Fundamentals.

The European debut of the new SEC577 course which Steve Armstrong taught at the SANS London Conference (December 2010), was sold out in a matter of weeks of being announced. This 2-day course focuses on the VMware suite of virtualisation products and management software; through a series of examples, discussion and practical exercises the attending the students quickly grasped the key security issues that can manifest when services and networks are virtualised.  Possibly one of the most hands on courses that SANS provides the exercises themselves are conducted utilising multiple virtualisation servers, GUI console management consoles and the command line, so the students really do work through all levels of security configuration possible.

The Networking+ article looks at how many think 2011 will see greater adoption of Virtualisation Technologies and stronger moves to Cloud computing.  The advise from many is to skill up on these technologies before our organisation adopts them; you need to understand the risks and security aspects to allow you to plan the implementation correctly rather than play catch-up.
